The Gold Standard
PGP, the acronym for Pretty Good Privacy, is wildly regarded as the gold standard when it comes to asymmetrical PKI encryption. PGP was developed by Philip Zimmermann in 1991 to address what he felt was a need to provide an ability to securely transmit and store files in the inherently insecure BBSs and newsgroup environments. PGP was also one of the first open-source software systems available in the early days of the Internet. While PGP exists as a commercial product, the OpenPGP standard as implemented by the GnuPG project, continues to provide a PGP-compatible, open-source solution. Today, PGP has evolved to address the security needs of individuals and large corporations alike. PGP is available for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, UNIX, and linux.
